Magnetic Knife Blocks & Strips
My knife blocks are simple and beautiful, they are smooth surface redwood burl or solid surface counter top material, making these blocks more hygienic then conventional knife blocks. And, you can see the blade you want to use. The magnets are very strong ceramic grade 5 blocks.
Many people have asked me how the wood becomes magnetic. Here is my best story.
In one-hundred to two-hundred BC there were very intense solar flares hitting the earth. These solar flares distorted the earth’s magnetic field and actually hit the tallest living organisms. The California redwood reaches over 300 feet heights and can live 3000 years. These trees were being bombarded by the solar flares and in combination with the earth’s magnetic field became magnetized. Due to intense harvesting of old growth redwoods very few of these trees remain (less than 2%) and fewer of those that were tall enough in 100 to 200 BC were hit by the flares and become magnetic. Likely none of the magnetic trees are still alive and have now fallen to the ground, so harvesting of the burls are now possible, since it would be a crime to cut down live old growth redwood trees.
While I have searched many years and many forests for more magnetic wood, I have nearly exhausted my supply and have not found more. I am currently in search of more magnetic wood, can you help? I prefer burls but will also use figured wood. The best way to find magnetic wood is to go into your local forest with as large as possible metal plate. If magnetic wood is present the metal plate will detect it. The larger the plate is the further away you will detect magnetic wood. I do believe more exists, perhaps in your local, so please, go out there with your steel plate and search for this exotic wood. Often many fallen trees in one area will be magnetic, now you must retrieve the wood from the often times remote location. I must suggest a safety precaution; anyone with an older pacemaker should not search for magnetic wood since the magnetic field could stop the function of the pacemaker.
Occasionally other species of trees are also magnetized. This was due to the solar flares hitting the tall redwood trees and deflecting to other species lower to the ground, thus magnetizing them as well. Unfortunately, these magnetized trees that lived so long ago have usually decayed and are even rarer to find. I have found madrone, walnut and black acacia here in California. I have received small quantities of magnetic Paduak from Africa. I can not explain how this species became magnetic, but obviously the solar flares may have hit other trees in other continents; thus a wider search for magnetic trees may be fruitful.
I would be very interested in obtaining more magnetized wood so please contact me.
